
Joanna Markiewicz was born in Poland and in 2005 received a Masters Degree in Theatre Science and Literature from Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan. Her thesis focused on the role of fine art in contemporary theatre. In 2006 Joanna emigrated to Ireland and has lived, worked there since.
Eager to develop skills in visual arts, Joanna started a course in Art and Design in Ireland. The following year Joanna was offered a place at the Institute of Technology, Sligo, to study Fine Art and successfully graduated with a BA in 2014.
Joanna was involved in many collaborative projects working with visual artists (Alison Kobayashi, Mark Garry), set and costume designers (Leszek Madzik, Jamie Vartan ), architects, etc.
She travelled to Australia back in 2019, where she worked as a freelancer and got inspired by exotic nature.
She has also collaborated with the Polish Education Center based in IT Sligo, working with 7-12 year old children as a drama and Polish language teacher guiding pupils on how to create a set design for the end
of year play.
Joanna’s mediums are various, using photography, digital montages, working with video, sound, sculpture, collages on paper. At the moment her focus is on abstract paintings, eco-art, sculpture and interior design.
Conceptual Art, Bauhaus, Synthetic and Analytical Cubism and psychology are her main theoretical interests.
